K, Briont mentioned today that when you open your character sheet it lags, and sure enough, if you open your character sheet and move around with it opened it lags and the chat lags too. If you close it, it will clear up.
If you enter the level up sequence and then exit without leveling, you will lag thereafter, same as having the character sheet open, or worse. And if you do complete a level-up, you will be frozen afterward and then crash with black screen and error.
I tried opening my character sheet and moving and it lags bad, (like a 1 minute or more lag) then when you close it, it didn't seem to clear up, really. I had to relog to clear the lag. Then I tried to run while the character sheet was opened and crashed with an error again.

As Briont and Seige have reported, the character sheet open seems to generate most of the lag I experience.
And (as a disclaimer for a newbie on this PW): the fact that newbies tend to have a far heavier use of the char sheet to understand the dynamics of what is going on, is more likely to be a cause of lag than newcomers having dubious overrides.

Thanks siege and galaxiid, for bringing it up. I wanted to report my findings earlier but thought better of posting while sleep-deprived.
Opening the character sheet causes a incredible amount of lag which doesn't really clear up even after closing it again. The only way to clear it was to log-out and log-in again. Granted, my ping to the PW isn't that great (200-400) but the character sheet shouldn't cause this kind of unplayable lag. As a test, I logged on to another PW (Dasaria 2) to see if it is a universal problem - it wasn't. I could move around and do stuff comfortably without lagging, running in one place or the strange rubber-banding.

This problem still persists. If you wanna play lag-free, don't open your character sheet.

Here is a precise description of what I am seeing:
If you open you character sheet, you immediately begin to experience lag. If you shout a message, others see it immediately (Ghost and I verified this with Vent), but it does not come up for some time for the person talking with his character sheet open. It seems like the longer the character sheet is open, the worse the lag gets.
If you close your character sheet, the lag persists (duration varies - the longer the sheet is open, the longer it persists in my estimation). The lag seems to be around two minutes.
This problem appeared prior to today's update. We have been having severe lag issues for some time, but I don't know if this was the cause prior to this morning. The lag does seem to be contagious.
Maybe there is a script running to do some sort of updating of the character sheet? Maybe it is running more frequently now? Maybe a timer or counter is getting off causing more frequent execution of said speculative script?
This problem is pretty severe. I played for several hours today and saw widespread client crashing (not mine, I learned to keep my character sheet shut plus you don't level very often in the late epic range).

its back the character sheet lag at least, other lag is slight but the sheet is just the same parameters as b4 if you open it briefly ,brief lag. if it stays open longer, longer lag.

I didn't really notice any char sheet lag until I leveled.

The longer it is open (e.g. while leveling), the worse the lag is. Try wandering around with your character sheet open. Eventually, you will crash out.

Trying to avoid the label of a killjoy, but figured its best to post it... character sheet lag has continued through to this update (1.23 etc), beldar's description is bang on in terms of symptomatics.

When levelling up, I recommend keeping the char sheet closed.
How do you do that?
Basically click the level-up button and then quickly close the char sheet before level-up screen comes on. I get less CTDs that way.
