Just logged in and tried to level again. When I click the level up button there is a pause before it opens up. Then, when I click the next button it goes to a black screen then crashes with an error. Also, shortly after I logged in, 2 players were dropped. Logged back in to try again. I did get the leveling finished but it stopped responding immediately after I was done and the server dropped another player. All of my icons disappeared and I got another message while frozen, same as before, that another player was getting attacked by "someone", and again they were not in POG with me. So, why would this "someone has attacked such-and-such" message appear on my log? I was trying to level at the same time i used Fast Start to make a mage. Every time I leveled I froze the last one freezing my comp. earlier in the day I ran a toon through the fast start and it was fine, always a bit of lag with the level but no crashes. I dont know what it is, just thought I'd tell ya what i was doing when i went offline in his Screenshot.

So, why would this "someone has attacked such-and-such" message appear on my log? That someone happened to be some Runnyeye goblin that was attacking my character in Enchanted Lands. There was a lag spike that happened suddenly without warning and I decided to run for the nearest exit point. Not sure what triggered the lag though. Before that it was generally fine for play.

Sure wish someone knew what is going on. Would be nice to be able to play again.
I have been wondering if it has anything to do with enchanted lands and cazic-thule, as we had something very similar in the way of this terrible lag when these new areas were first added. The lag eventually went away. There also hasn't been much playing going on in enchanted for a while until recently, I don't believe. Perhaps there could be somthing with those areas that, when played, cause problems, and don't when dormant? Dunno.
There was also a group of players that played from behind the same router on or around that time. They have not since returned but I believe there are a couple of guys on the server now that are from the same place and perhaps they play on the same router, but I thought that would clear up on a reset. We also have not noticed any of the "name swaps" that came with that particular problem, so that may not be it at all.
Another thing of note is that some say companions lag. I notice Farris/Phariss has a dino. And I also noticed that when Purtellfr logged in the other night I immediately crashed with the same black screen and error. And I know he also has a Dino companion.
So, anyhow, not to point any fingers - i'm merely grasping at straws here, since no one knows what's going on here and neither do I. We have to find out what is going on so we can fix it and we can all play again.
But anyhow, the symptoms seem to be lag spikes and what seems like a delay from the server at times. A delay connecting, a delay loading character stats when selecting your character. A delay when leveling up. Some players crashing when another logs in. Some players crashing when someone levels, and most people crashing when trying to level themselves, or immediately after leveling. And this strange, "Someone has attacked such-and-such" in our (or at least my) logs when the person isn't in our party or even in the same area of the server. Which i've noticed twice, and both times were while frozen, immediately after leveling up. Appears to be a pattern on that symptom.
As for other files, other than overrides, didn't someone say that haks and tlk files from other servers could cause problems too? And there are "2" override folders - in my documents NW2 and in your actual application folder to NWN2.
There are also a good number of players that don't have SOZ and I have no clue if that causes any problems other than that they complain of weird graphic glitches when around yuan-ti's and Grey Orcs that also appear invisible to them, of course. Not sure if it affects anyone other than themselves or not, though.
Oh, and my crashes are a black screen for a second then crash with an error. Is anyone or everyone else getting the same kind of thing? This just started recently for me but it also did it once in a single player campaign...

I'd be interested to know if a companion/familiar 2da change to a 2da portrait instead of the 3d portrait fixes the "lag" some people have with pets. I've never seen it in SP so it's not something I can remotely test.

yeah changing any of the 3D portraits will reduce fps and load lag. Id like to see the entire game for MP moved to 2D portraits since I know they will never fix what ever bad code they put in the game for it.

I think all summons and companions cause lag to some extent. I suspect that code is just inefficient - too much comm between client and server. My speculation is based purely on empirical observation. Companions/summons get stuck on doors anyway. Find a better way to survive.

Ok, last night I was on all by myself, and the server still acted up. It was fine for a while, but then went wonky for a bit. Don't have another comp running the game behind the router, so that's not a factor. The character I was playing was Mike my Half-Elvin pure cleric lev 23. Was grinding in Epic Mirj crunching Golems. Had died trying to get the Ada Heroic and friends, and had respawned to the POG bind point. Walk back to the entrance, rested, and tried to open the doors before buffing and reentering. When I clicked on the doors, all that happened was that my toon started "running in place". Could not do anything else after that, and after watching him for about 2 minutes of running in place, hit the escape kep and loged out. After logging back in there was a lot of lag and a couple more "freeze ups". No leveling, no companions or familures, no one else on, or logging in or out. Point in fact seemed to get better after someone else did log in.
It's almost like every now and again info between the server and client gets lost, with the end result the client side just hangs, and the server stops for a bit then runs on. Hmm may have to run some pings and packet loss test from here to see if that is happening. Hehh been a while since i have done that though, and never on a XP machine let alone a Vista 64 one, hope i can figure out how to do that now.

Based on your post, Ghost, I am wondering if messages are sticking in a queue somewhere. There are a number of ways and locations where this could happen (I have seen this back when I programmed IP phones). I know how to do some network debugging so I might give it a shot. Possible places that messages can get stuck include the router, the IP stack on the server (or clients - but unlikely here given the widespread problems), or in the application software listening to the IP stack (NWN2 bug). It is possible to narrow the source down by trying other software - ICMP pings and other network software. If they don't have significant latency, then it is probably the NWN2 software (this is my bet because another server I play on has had lag problems lately as well).
How we go about getting people to check into the bug, I don't know. If I had the code, I might be able to fix it. I wonder what changes (if any) have been made to the networking code lately. Sometimes just adding traffic is enough to expose long standing problems. These types of problems are usually pretty frustrating for all involved. The developers don't see it and don't always even believe it exists. The players don't have enough information to describe the bug or consistently reproduce it. The hazards of modern software development... in that respect, I am glad I know longer do that type of work.
