I don't even have a headset hooked up to my PC anymore after I kicked my Allegiance habit.
Besides, having to type makes me all nostalgic about my old MUDding days.

Xfire is a gaming messenger. It tracks the number of hours you have played a game as well as shows you what other people are playing at that moment. It has built in voice chat, conference chat/voice, game update downloader(via torrent protocal), and "clan" groups that allow you to see everyone in a particular clan without adding each person to your msger list.
Like MSN for gamers. Simply.

The main attractions are voice chat and an in game IM client that uses DX overlays so that you can still get popups while running a full screen DX game.

Are the pop ups forced? Xfire just hosts the videos or it handles the making and uploading for you?

the xfire ingame can be turned off in the options. Cant see a reason to turn it off unless your video lags when it happens. Lower end cards have that issue as well as old drivers.
Xfire is used to create the AVI as well as convert it to MP4 and upload it to their site where they host it. the first video was over 500MB and the second was almost 2GB in raw format. After converting and uploading it was 4ish and 23ish MB respectively. I deleted the raw video after uploading. No reason to have 2GB AVI files of me playing so I can watch later. But the ingame play on Xfire can be used to promote the server and in theory pin down bugs. But mostly cause its cool and promotes the server.

I signed up to join MMT's group figuring several people would... so far all I have really used it for is instant messaging MMT. I did get a random IM from some dude in Bolivia asking me about multiplayer NWN2 and I referred him to the LDoA home page. Haven't gotten any more random messages, so I guess that won't be much of a problem. In game, I prefer to use the built in chat, but XFire is there when you are out of game too. I don't know if having it track my playing time is good (I am a little scared to know how much I play).
I guess it is pretty much the same as AIM or Yahoo Messenger, but it has a way to link up with your LDoA friends. I like it because it allows me to compartmentalize my IM contacts by application (LDoA contacts not mixed with work contacts - don't want to type messages in the wrong window).

Yes, xfire is like AIM or MSN instant messaging except that it works ingame and has a few other utilities that don't work very well IMO. Myself and a friend of mine who also plays on this server (rep23 log name) run a Call of Duty 4 / COD5 clan and xfire is mandatory to join. The voice chat isn't very good, and is not clear enough or lag-free to use during a scrim so we have a ventrilo server. Maybe it is suitable for a couple people to use at once but several users makes it lag and creates static.
I have my xfire on when my computer is on, feel free to friend me xfire name: cyrinn

they added a new hosting option for the voice chat. They can host the server. This normally clears up the lag issues since someone playing isnt hosting the chat room. The clarity issues... well its voice chat and there arent a lot of programs out there that sound as good as vent or TS. they are the top dogs of the voice chat world
