All I know is that yesterday I was in a group with 2 other players and one person summoned their familiar (who stayed in the back and did nothing). The lag for the three of us went through the roof. The server wasn't even that busy. I don't know if the other areas were lagging with the familiar present, but we sure were. Maybe I'll setup my packet sniffer and see if I can ascertain what the network traffic profile does differently with the familiar present. Based on the lag I was seeing on my 6 mb/s connection, I would not be surprised to learn that the server and client are exchanging two messages for every pixel the familar moves. I agree that there should not be a difference between how the familar moves and how a monster moves, but empirical results show otherwise.

I'd like to know if this is an issue for animal companions and normal summons for you. If summons work better then the animal companion replacement may actually improve performance. ROFLMAO if that's the case.

I should be able to test this easily. I'll post back here when I have the results.

I'm not sure if it is possible, but what about new base classes? Such as Wu-Jen, Shujenja, War-Mage, Scout, Ninja, and Samurai? Would that be possible? It may not be due to having to make a new spell book and what I have learned from you guys is that the game doesn't support that currently. I would definitely love to see Wu-Jen though.

New base classes with spellsbooks: No.
Skirmish isn't doable without a rewrite of the combat engine so Scout is out.
Ninja got cut from my list when it is compared to the Thug and Swashbuckler (especially with the Daring Outlaw feat).

I think Thug should get cut and ninja brought back.
