Can't wait for the archealogists to find that one... "We see here that ancient man engaged in some sort of ritualistic destruction of these totems." I always think of things like that when the archealogists are talking about fertility symbols. Wow. That's the sort of insight you get after staying up for five days in a row or taking something you shouldn't have. Thanks for the enlightenment Beldar. That puts a whole new perspective on a variety of issues.

be pretty easy to do using transition randomizing Beldar. You go north but come out east in another room instead of the south of the intended room. Sounds like a great idea if you ask me.
Phidar <-- MUD I remember playing lots and lots of Phidar when I was suppose to be at school or at work. That and Diablo 2. Good times. OH OH AND Dragon Realms! Cymryth play for years and got me to play it for a long while. Great times.

I hated those spinning plates that made you go east when you thought you were going north (not that I am still bitter). AAAARrrrgghhh! Those freaking spinners (I got my fix on Bards Tale 2). Do you know, in a fit of sadistic glee I almost put something like that in one of the dungeons.

Can't say that I know of KoD, but I do know of Brad and remember him well.
There was a graphical version of IoK that came out around 1992 called Legends of Kesmai and I played that, along with a few Unix MUDs and also worked a bit on PsionMud with some friends at school. Of all the MUDs, Renegade Outpost was by far my favorite and most memorable. We used to sit in a row of 10-15 people in the computer lab all night long. Those were some fun times.

I played 8 for a couple weeks or so, computer crashed and i lost one of the disks. I made a team of nothing but wolves and cats who tended to die... often.

well, i will do my famous 'thread necro' ability and introduce myself. I have been here for about 2 weeks. I have 4 chars from 1-12th lvl and still do not really remember their names yet.
I been playing mostly RP servers so it is refreshing to actually grind and level without restrictions or 'community apathy', but I am an old (i have pnp chars that are over 30 lears old) skool player and i like my balance of hack and slash and RP. I will tend to try and RP with folks. please humor me :}
I played many of the games you all mentioned. My first real On line game I played was Air Warrior - a ww2 flight sim that you had to connect to via a bat file and I can remember rejoicing at how leet my 14.4 modem was (it was not my first modem ) I started playing ssi D&d games and been playing D&D on comps ever since.
I helped run a NWN1 PW for about 6 years. I wrote a massive token system for quest rewards because all the players complaining about how the items they got from a quest was not as good as the random drop they had for that slot (ever hear that Lou? :}) I am converting it to NWN2....
irl i am a web programmer and I own a bar, married with kids and i play way too much. I will be here alot but i will need to get my RP fix if i cannot start to entice you all. I play SOH for my RP kicks. Awesome server but entirely too restrictive at times...
oh, and once the Hockey Playoffs begin, I will never be on during a game...
I have met several of you and an pretty fond of the server so far...

I helped run a NWN1 PW for about 6 years. I wrote a massive token system for quest rewards because all the players complaining about how the items they got from a quest was not as good as the random drop they had for that slot (ever hear that Lou? :}) I am converting it to NWN2.... Actually the complainsts that I both heard and made with rewards was: Hey, I got this great Bastard sword, but I use hand axes so it's worthless to me. We are on our third revision of solving that dilema: NWN1, first PW In ou first PW we had this behemoth of a token reward system. I have no desire to revisit *that* mess. It was a dual system. The first was you could turn in certain creature items for tokens then trade the tockens for items. There was a secondary system tied to the random lost dungeons where you could find special tokens in various chests and use those to enhance weapons at a special forge. NWN1: Second PW. This is where I veered course from the "find more powerful items as you level" standard loot system. In every book I read the people weren't constantly updating their items. They usuall either found 1 special at the very beginning or used their mundane items till much later. This system sought to capture that using a "fame" system. As you defeated foes and completed quests your items would build fame and eventually be catapulted to "Famous" which would open up some sockets which could be filled with gems to enhance the abilities of the weapon. There were 5 levels of fame from "known" to "Legendary" and eventualy named. (all nicely color coded of course). Gems were a dime a dozen, but open slots were rare. NWN2: The fame/gem system was distilled down to the rune system you see before you. It really is the culmination of 5 years of thinking about it. It readily solves the problem of getting an item you can use (well, except for you casters that can replicate it's effects with spells). The one thing it lacks is the exciting "cool" factor of new items, but the adornment system is almost ready and it should provide that. This is a system for providing non-standard bonuses to items.

I love this sort of necro-post. I remember when I got my 14.4 modem (I upgraded from 1200 baud and most of my friends had 2400 so I went from being slow to king overnight).
I was addicted to the hockey playoffs too for awhile. Then I got so emotionally invested in my team (GO STARS!) that I finally decided that I was not enjoying the experience of watching them. I still watch occasionally, but they tend to make me sick to my stomach. Hopefully, Richards will be back from his injury soon.
I am interested in seeing the adornment system. LDoA is pretty light on loot. Non-magic users get pretty hosed by this (stripping buffs off of magic users doesn't really address the issue either, it just makes the magic users weak too). I normally dislike playing casters, but the fast buff rod makes them tolerable here and the difficulty makes them indispensable. I am pretty sure that most of my characters on loot heavy PWs would struggle in the new epic areas. On the other hand, when you can get a +10 20d6 elemental damage weapon (and you can on one of the worlds I play on, although they are extremely expensive), everyone tends to end up building Kazes because it is really tough to beat 18x that damage (it can be done, but not without careful planning). Of course, I think Dordon and I have or are pretty close to figuring out a class of builds that can solo Mirh. I suspect this build has the potential to become the default here. I am pretty sure wettshoes has used a variant of it to solo the skeleton boss so it is looking pretty promising.
I guess any environment is going to favor particular builds or be really easy (like the OEI campaigns). In my experience, high magic tends to at least make more sub-optimal builds viable.
Welcome to the server yyrk!

You know....instead of making a build that can solo a dungeon...you could just group up.....
Ah well. If you can solo Mirh, it's only a matter of time until someone can solo the Lost Temple.

We do group up. But the challenge is soloing it.
I think Lost Temple is going to take quite the build to solo. I have seen some very powerful parties wiped in there. The inability to rest more than once (or maybe we just kill till out of buffs and camp for 48 minutes until arcane rest recharges?) really limits casters and non-casters cannot accumulate enough AC/spell immunity/regeneration to survive more than a few minutes.
I suspect that a very cautious Kaze with spell immunity and lucky saving throw rolls might be able to do it w/ HiPS and regeneration, but it will take a while and some of them might have too much DR to ever be damaged by a Kaze (at least w/ current gear).

Of course, I think Dordon and I have or are pretty close to figuring out a class of builds that can solo Mirh. Never really had an issue soloing epic mirj at all with my SF/Cleric/SL/monk. Can't imagine FMs struggling there either, I'll test it out soon with my FM build.

They're not talking about Mirj, they're talking about Mirh

The complaint about 'you gave me a sword, i use a hand axe' is exactly what I was refering to... that and the stuff like the 3 spell slot necklass for returning the daughter to the merchant in the chode area, but i have a neaklass of vitality that is much better than 3 spell slots.
The NwN1 world I used to help run was called Dragon Mountain. It is still going strong, but We kinda decided to take a break from the whole thing and i have been enjoyin playing... but i now miss the creative aspect of it and running the epic storylines as a dm. I enjoy dming a good adventure as much as playing a char.
our token system was a series of merchants that allowed you to trade tokens for enchantments on your weapons. it was all dynaminc with like over 1,000,000 combos of what you could make. you could make almost any type of item or weapon or armor, with all immunity items being 'drop only' so you would need to configure around them. You would od a quest and the reward would be a set of tokens. We had a guy that allowed you to trade them in to redo you tokens as you progressed. It is very simular to your rune system.
A dallas stars fan? I understand why hockey is harder to watch for you, but I am a Red Wings fan so I am still very hooked. Well i have been a fan during our drought that lasted the first part of my life. I am still betting the Wings go deep into the playoffs this year and maybe... just maybe we hoist yet another cup. But if we want to take hockey, we need a thread dedicated to it :}

Those are the class set items created by Obsidian. Some of them are awful and some of them are great. There are some I wouldn't really use even if I didn't have a slot free. *shrug*, that's one of the few times I jused prefabbed rewards. That said, the mages get pretty decent rewards. The head piece grants immunity to mind spells (one of the extremely rare immunity items I put in the game), so even though you can get better int gear, it continues to hold value. Also, I think you'll find, once you get boots of hardiness which also improve con, that the 3 slot necklace suddenly starts looking pretty good. If you want lame items look at what the clerics get.
