And we're back. The NWN2 series has been on my mind since the announcement of NWN1 Extended Edition and since I have free hosting (through 2019) available I figured I'd throw the server back up. New direction connection is 13.90.198.71. The website has been updated with the relevant information. It is strongly recommended that you use the NWN2 client extension as it fixes a lot of bugs (especially the random crash when downloading files) and makes the whole MP experience,in the absence of gamespy and the masterserver, better

So... Wasn't sure if I would even try this since last time I tried NWN2 it was quite dated and clunky, but I thought i'd check it out for nostalgia's sake and it seems my SoZ expansion is burned onto a DVD with its CD-key, but it was a digital download and requires a Digital River activation. It doesn't seem to work and I have no activation code. I thought I bought SoZ from Direct2Drive, who sold all of our stuff to Gamefly and then returned recently as Direct2Drive again. Neither site has any record of me owning SoZ which isn't unusual as there are other games of mine that they have no record of... what a mess.
It says connecting to activation server. Connected to activation server. Then it tells me Activation Failed. A connection error occurred. If I click Buy Now it goes to Atari website... or tries to. I may have purchased it directly from the Atari site too, but not sure. The Atari page times out... Even the Customer Service button goes to Atari.com "Page Not Found." So, it's so old that they don't even have a webpage for it anymore but they want to make sure I activate it and not pirate it?... smh
Hmm, none of my email addresses work on Atari. Looks like no one sells SoZ on digital download anymore either. Might have to just buy a disc. Hmm, all of the physical copies are used so who knows if the cd-keys are valid. If we even need valid keys anymore?
Anyhow, I emailed Digital River. Here's hoping...

Hey Siegelayer,
You can always pick up a copy from GOG games (www.gog.com) it's 19.99 for the complete set (nwn2, MoTB, SoZ etc). It's DRM free and requires no activation.
Stock game is still pretty dated and clunky but the fan made client extension fixes a lot of that clunkiness, but it did take me a little while to get used to the camera again. Anyway, its still up and it seems we picked up a few regulars even after all these years.z

Hi, Lou. Thanks for the reply. Well, I started to pirate the darn thing but read on the torrent comments that the 1.23 patch (or one of them) removes the SecureRom. So I tried the NWN2 Updater but it wouldn't work/connect. I downloaded all of the patches I needed and the NWN2Patcher program - all located on this page: NWN2 Patch Catalog in case anyone has the same issue. Then after applying all of the latest patches I ran the updater again. And now the game starts without a Digital River Activation Prompt!

Well, seems that didn't work. Game kept crashing when trying to start a campaign. And would just freeze when trying to connect to the server.

OK, that didn't work. So I had to "get" the GoG version and it works fine now. So... were you able to restore "some version of our characters" as you said, or no? Or does the server not know who we are now that we no longer log in through the master server?

I would urge you to get the client extension (https://neverwintervault.org/project/nwn2/other/nwn2-client-extension) it will make you're life much easier. There isn't much in the way of protection but if you log in with your original credentials it should pick up your characters once I transfer them.
It looks like I have your characters from November 2008. There is Drax, o-reniishi, sieglayer and xianthefavored. I'll push them up to the server now.
EDIT: characters are transferred.

OK, thx!
I have been running the client extension already, this whole time. No idea what's up with the other install, from my discs, except that on the first patch it would not patch nwloader.exe because the file was different than it expected, so the only way to patch was to ignore missing files and skip that one. Other than that I have no idea. But, oh well. The GoG version works fine.
And I forgot how to make characters, but had only one on a notepad file and found one more posted in these forums. I just remembered that I used to write them down on paper with a pen, and I threw them all away years ago when I moved. lol So sad.

Ha, those look like some noob builds/characters of mine, from when I first started. Dang, are all of our other characters lost? I had a wizard/Marduk, archer/Evil Deru, Forest Master/Epoche, Warlock, Flurry Staff Cleric, etc. - Several at lvl 30, I think? I could just make new ones too but I don't even have a clue how to make characters anymore. lol And is there still a quick start? It didn't seem to let me but perhaps it doesn't count as me having a lvl 10 character yet.
I managed to remember and find the Vordan's Character Creator and get it working with Kaedrin's but, even though I have some of my old characters downloaded they are not complete and many are missing, still. I guess I never downloaded them when/before the server was shut down.

Yes, There is still a quickstart.
The initial sever death lost a lot of progress and although I had fairly recent backups there was no real incentive to put effort into keeping them in the following decade. I just happened to find these on a old external drive and were the most recent I had.
There is a drive that probably has probably more recent backups except it's a pre-sata hard drive. Not sure if I even have a computer that has the connections for it anymore. There's probably some solution for that and I'll look into it and see if I can get anything going.
I might do something like double the xp for characters under level 20 or something like that. Enough that people can advance back to where they were quicker.

Cool. A couple of my characters were ready to level, so I leveled one that was over lvl 10, and I think that was enough to trigger Quick Start. I have the Herald of Change guy now.
Hmm, maybe not. He told me I must walk the path at least once.

On the guy who is level 10, you have to activate your spirit shard and use the "register for quick start" conversation.
