The Pathfinder version of 3.5 (~3.75) has an interesting rule for Fighters that could help pure melee types.
Armor Training: Starting at 3rd level, a fighter gains added protection from the armor he is wearing. Whenever he is wearing armor, he gains an additional +1 armor bonus to his armor class, reduces the armor check penalty by 1 (to a minimum of 0), and increases the maximum Dexterity bonus allowed by his armor by 1. Every four levels thereafter (7th, 11th, and 15th), a fighter gains even more protection, increasing these bonuses by +1 each time, for a total of +4 to armor class at 15th level, with a -4 reduction to the armor check penalty and a +4 increase to the maximum Dexterity bonus allowed.
Weapon Training: Starting at 5th level, a fighter gains a +1 bonus on attack and damage rolls. Every four levels thereafter (9th, 13th, and 17th), a fighter becomes further trained gaining another +1 bonus on attack and damage rolls.
Armor Mastery: At 19th level, a fighter gains DR 5/- whenever he is wearing armor or using a shield.
I'm willing to add these as a cmi_option for fighters/thugs and another option to allow the melee prc's (Anointed Knight, Champion of the Wild, Duelist, Dwarven Defender, Elemental Archer, Elemental warrior, Frenzied Berserker, Tempest, Warrior of Darkness, and Weapon Master) to count as fighter levels for determining the bonus.
I've also figured out a way to add the Melee Weapon Mastery (+2 AB, +2 Damage with all weapons) for Slashing, Blunt, and Piercing without having 30+ different feats. You can take the feat with 4 levels of fighter but you won't get the bonus unless your right-hand weapon has the appropriate specialization/focus feat.
Thoughts?
