When I used to play regularly a few months ago, the server would stay up for 2-3 days without crashing. Now I'm back again, but it seems the server's a lot more unstable. How long's this been going on and anyone have any theories as to what may be causing it?

Seems like this always happens after OEI releases a new set of bugs (err update). I think the server hosting utility that traps bugs to prevent crashes might need an update? Vaguely recall reading something about that...
Also, Mirh seems to be very taxing to load. I wouldn't be surprised if maybe having a number of players zone in might cause server grief. I know it causes client grief. I have seen severe lag when someone was transitting into Mirh while I was standing around (messing with the appearance changer near the Mirh entrance).

It crashed like mad today with nobody in Mirh that I was aware of. Had a couple of low levels in the newbie dungeons taking on kobolds, orc, and gobbos...and a couple of us in the badlands.
There are a LOT of new players right now so I suspect that someone has some overrides from another server.

It'd be nice if the debt loss incurred when you log/lose connect in instanced areas was turned off until this and the screwy disconnects happening in the new zones is sorted out.
Anyone know why that is even in place? Was there some exploit or something that involved people logging in instanced zones?

I think the issue was people would log off if it became apparent that they were going to die. Logging off kicks you out of the instanced zone (and hence to safety). The xp penalty keeps you from avoiding the consequences of death.
Unfortunately, it is catching a lot of non-cheating crashers.

Can already do that twice with Recall and Town Gate. Sure would hate for someone to have 3 ways to do this. . . :/

The server instability is what we get with the standard OEI server code. There is a NWNx plug-in developed by skywing with Obsidian's assistance that fixes a lot of the server crashes, unfortunately it needs to be rebuilt for every NWN2 update. The server will continue to be crashy until we get the new bugfix dll.

Yeah so in the mean time can you turn off the exp loss on disconnect from instances? Wouldn't be so bad overall but it's cumulative and the server went down MANY times today...then I crashed while loading into an instanced zone twice.

I have to do it per-instance, I'll see what I can do.

If it's that much hassle you may just want to focus on the lost dungeon of mihr. It seems to be the zone transition giving most people issues, and the other instanced areas I can think of (e.g. land's edge newbie quests) wouldn't net cumulative exp debt.

I'm about 99.9% sure it's the battlefield; server crashed 2 times today. Both times while I was on the field. Last time there was only one other person on the server. I started on the field w/no one on - just in case it did crash.
Maybe I should just say I'm crashing the server by being on the field. Either way, those rangers will have to do without my generalship for a while.
On a side note, when I start a battle I get a debug massage, it's roughly: (Debug) 109.
Dunno if that helps at all.
Oh, and lastly my override folder is totally clean.

the battlefield is a source of crashes just because it does a lot of stuff. However, with the bugfix dll it's stable. We're just waiting on that, but, yeah, might want to take it easy there until it's in.

We had some crashing last night. I don't think anyone was doing battlefield either. I lost about 6200 xp between two crashes (only 1700 in the second one - I actually figured out the server crashed because I pressed the save widget icon and nothing happened). I guess that is the hazard of a non-buffing build that has regeneration. I never *have* to rest so I tend not to get saved.

tentative binaries for the bugfix are available tonight. Should we wait until it's all fleshed out or be one of the early adopters?

How hard would it be to remove? I don't see it making things that much worse, so wouldn't mind if it went in now. I need to farm the field lol
